The 22-year-old commercial guide Morgan Heimer belonged to Cody, a city in Wyoming. He was actively enrolled in the University of Wyoming, pursuing an English major. The case drew attention because Heimer was well-versed and well-trained in hiking, backpacking, swimming, and rafting yet he seemed to disappear in an area that had been searched repeatedly over the years.

Morgan Heimer was co-leading an expedition accompanied by a lead guide and a few regular civilians on June 2, 2015. They were reportedly on the sixth day of an eight-day excursion through the Grand Canyon. On reaching the Pumpkin Springs located at river mile 213 along the Colorado River, Heimer told the lead guide that he was going to “take some time off” that afternoon, which was apparently his last sentence to the team lead before his disappearance. The lead guide noticed his disappearance when he walked away from the cliff to talk to a client, and when he looked back, he was gone.

Rangers Launch the Search

One of the clients reported Heimer’s missing at 7:26 p.m. on the same day after he did not turn up after the swim session of the group. Search teams began to search the immediate area for any sign of Heimer and searched the river between River Miles 211-215 around Pumpkin Springs for the first few days. An extended search in an area 12 miles out of the initial location, in a place called Diamond Lake, was also made. The search went on for six days, almost non-stop, but nothing was found. Heimer was last seen wearing a dark-colored Astral personal flotation device, a blue plaid long-sleeve shirt, a pair of Chaco sandals, a maroon baseball cap, and brightly colored shorts. He was also carrying a purple water bottle with him when he was last seen.

The Official Response

After the initial response, the investigation still produced no clear explanation for where Heimer went or what may have happened to him. Interviews with the clients and leads suspected no foul play. The officials concluded the possibility of drowning and sinking to the bottom of the Colorado River of Morgen Heimer. The case is still open in the public record and remains in “continuous, limited mode”.
