The Bizarre Oakville Blobs: The Strange Rain of 1994

On August 7, 1994, something bizarre reportedly fell from the sky over Oakville, Washington. Instead of ordinary rain, the residents encountered tiny, translucent blobs of gelatinous material that covered parts of the town.

The strange substance appeared more than once over the following weeks, turning an unusual weather event into one of Washington’s most enduring mysteries. But what exactly were the Oakville blobs? And where did they come from?

The Strange Rain

The initial accounts came during the early hours of August 7. Residents described tiny, clear blobs that were roughly the size of grains of rice. Among them was officer David Lacey, who was reportedly driving when the strange material began falling. When he switched on his windshield wipers, the substance smeared across the glass instead of behaving like ordinary rain. Other residents later reported finding the gelatinous material on roofs, roads, vehicles and surrounding land. Similar incidents were reported several times during the following weeks.

Reports of Illness

The mystery became more disturbing when the witnesses started to become “violently sick”. Sunny Barclift, one of the residents who collected samples of the unknown blobs, said that she, her brother and her mother, Dotty Hearn, experienced symptoms including nausea and dizziness around the time of the incident. Dotty Hearn especially suffered extreme illness, ultimately diagnosed with a severe ear infection, leading to hospitalisation. The substance is also said to have affected several animals after coming into contact with it across the area.

What Was In the Blobs?

Attempts were made to examine samples of the mysterious material. One early account claimed that human white blood cells had been found in the substance. However, later examination reportedly found cells without nuclei, which would not be consistent with human white blood cells. Further lab results also reported that two types of bacteria were detected, namely Pseudomonas fluorescens and Enterobacter cloacae. Both can occur naturally in the environment, and are incapable of causing such sudden extreme symptoms in a healthy human being. Their presence therefore did not explain the illnesses or reveal what the blobs themselves were.

The Jellyfish Theory

One of the strangest explanations involved jellyfish. Residents learned that military aircraft were conducting bombing exercises in the Pacific Ocean off the Washington coast. This led to speculation that jellyfish could have been caught in explosions, broken apart and somehow carried into the atmosphere before falling over Oakville with the rain. The theory became part of the local story, but there is no evidence establishing that jellyfish remains caused the blobs.

A Military Experiment?

Another theory suggested that the blobs were connected to secret military testing. The idea gained attention because of military activity in the region around the time of the incidents. Some residents wondered whether the material could have been part of biological or chemical experiments. However, there is no documented evidence confirming that the U.S. military created or released the blobs. The theory remains speculation rather than an established explanation.

Aircraft Waste?

Another explanation proposed that the substance came from an aircraft. Aircraft waste has sometimes been called “blue ice” because wastewater can freeze at altitude. But the Oakville material was described as clear or translucent rather than blue. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reportedly rejected the idea as an explanation for the Oakville blobs, making this theory difficult to reconcile with the available accounts.

A Natural Phenomenon?

There have also been attempts to connect the blobs with naturally occurring gelatinous substances sometimes called star jelly. It is a name given to mysterious jelly-like material previously mentioned in European folklore and historical accounts. Various explanations have been proposed for it, including biological material such as algae, amphibian material or slime moulds. However, there is no confirmed identification showing that the Oakville material was something like that of star jelly.

The Mystery Remains

The Oakville blobs remain difficult to explain because the available evidence is limited. Something unusual was reportedly found falling during rain in 1994, and samples were examined at the time. But the surviving accounts do not provide a definitive identification of the material or establish that it caused the illnesses reported by some residents.

With the original samples apparently unavailable for modern analysis, the mystery has remained open for decades. The Oakville blobs may ultimately have had an ordinary scientific explanation. But without the original material and complete laboratory records, exactly what fell from the sky over Oakville in 1994 remains uncertain.
