Who was Dan Markel?

Dan Markel was born on October 9, 1972 and was a Harvard Law School graduate, a legal scholar, and professor at Florida State University College of Law in Tallahassee, Florida. He was widely respected in the legal community for his work in criminal law and legal ethics.

Markel married Wendi Adelson in 2006, and the couple had two sons before divorcing in 2013. Court records show that their separation became increasingly contentious, particularly over child custody and Wendiโ€™s request to relocate with the children to South Florida, where her family lived. Markel opposed the move, and the court did not allow the relocation.

The murder of Dan Markel

On the morning of July 18, 2014, Dan Markel returned home after dropping his children off at preschool. As he pulled into the driveway of his Tallahassee home, he was shot in the head by an assailant. He died the following day in the hospital from his injuries.

Investigators later determined that the shooting had been carried out as a murder-for-hire rather than a random act of violence. Authorities traced the crime to hitmen Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera, who had travelled from Miami to carry out the killing before returning home.

How investigators uncovered the conspiracy

The investigation lasted several years and relied on phone records, financial evidence, witness testimony, surveillance footage, and recorded conversations, which provided direct evidence linking the individuals to the conspiracy. According to prosecutors, Garcia carried out the shooting while Luis Rivera acted as the driver.

Authorities alleged that Katherine Magbanua acted as the intermediary between the hired killers and Charlie Adelson, Wendi Adelsonโ€™s brother. Prosecutors argued that Charlie Adelson financed the murder, while his mother, Donna Adelson, helped orchestrate the plot.

The prosecution maintained that the motive for the murder centred on the familyโ€™s desire for Wendi Adelson and her children to relocate permanently to South Florida after the custody dispute prevented the move.

Why is Wendi Adelson controversial?

Although Wendi Adelson has testified during several trials connected to the case, she has never been charged with any crime.
Prosecutors have publicly referred to her as an unindicted co-conspirator, but they have not filed criminal charges against her. Throughout the investigation and subsequent trials, Wendi has consistently denied any involvement in Dan Markelโ€™s murder.

Final thoughts

More than a decade after Dan Markelโ€™s death, the case remains one of the most significant murder-for-hire prosecutions in recent U.S. history. Multiple convictions have established the existence of a conspiracy, yet questions continue to surround whether anyone else will face criminal charges. While Wendi Adelson remains at the centre of public discussion, it is important to distinguish between speculation and the legal record. As of August 2026, she has not been charged with any offence, and no court has found her criminally responsible for Dan Markelโ€™s murder.
