Jason Landry was heading home on a quiet December night towards Missouri City, Texas. However, his car was found crashed on an isolated dirt road, his belongings were scattered across the ground, and the only footprints investigators discovered seemed to end in the darkness. More than five years later, no one knows what happened to Jason Landry.

Unlike many missing person cases, there is no confirmed crime scene, no verified sightings after the crash, and no evidence pointing decisively toward foul play or an accident. The unanswered questions surrounding Jason’s disappearance continue to puzzle investigators and the true crime community alike.

Who Is Jason Landry?
Jason Landry was a 21-year-old student in 2020 at Texas State University. Friends and family described him as intelligent, responsible, and close to his loved ones. In December 2020, he planned to drive home to Missouri City, Texas, to spend the holidays with his family. It was supposed to be a routine trip that he had made before.
The Night Jason Vanished
On the evening of December 13, 2020, Jason left San Marcos and headed toward his family’s home. He drove through several small towns on the routine route and then, sometime before midnight, Landry deviated from his planned route. A volunteer firefighter found his Nissan Altima crashed and abandoned on Salt Flat Road. Police reached the crash site, but Jason himself was nowhere to be found.
An Investigation Filled With Questions

After the crash was reported, law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and began searching the surrounding area. The car was damaged, the lights were still on, the keys inside, and the front passenger side door was locked. Jason’s father, Kent Landry, also travelled to the location the next morning after learning about the incident.
900 ft from the crash site, he found many of Jason’s personal belongings scattered around the road, including his backpack containing wallet, laptop, gaming equipment, and most bizarrely, his clothing. Investigators also recovered a small amount of marijuana among the scattered belongings and shorts with a small blood smear on closer inspection. Authorities concluded the small blood stain was accidental, ruling out foul play.

Authorities launched an extensive search involving local law enforcement, the Texas Rangers, search-and-rescue teams, drones, helicopters, K-9 units, and volunteers. Despite repeated searches of the surrounding area, no evidence indicating Jason’s whereabouts was discovered.
Questions That Remain Unanswered
Investigators have not determined why Jason left his vehicle or why his belongings were found scattered around the crash site. While authorities have not found confirmed evidence of foul play, several aspects of the case remain unexplained. One of the most discussed details is why Jason’s clothing was found discarded despite temperatures that night reportedly ranging between 36 degrees and 43 degrees fareinheight. Authorities also examined Jason’s cellphone activity, vehicle data, and digital footprint, but none provided a clear explanation for his disappearance.
Theories Behind the Disappearance
Because the investigation has produced few definitive answers, several theories have emerged over the years. Some believe Jason may have become disoriented after the crash from brain injury and wandered into the surrounding wilderness, where harsh terrain or environmental conditions prevented him from being found. Others suspect an unknown third party could have encountered him after the accident. However, investigators have never publicly identified evidence confirming foul play. Another point of discussion has been why Jason was travelling along an unfamiliar rural road rather than the more direct route home. Whether it resulted from a navigation error, a wrong turn, or another circumstance remains unknown. To date, none of these theories has been proven.
Where the Case Stands Today
Jason Landry remains a missing person, and the investigation is still open. His family has continued to advocate for renewed searches and public awareness, hoping that someone may remember a detail that seemed insignificant at the time. Over the years, search efforts have been repeated in and around the area where his car was discovered, but no confirmed evidence explaining his disappearance has been recovered.
