On the night of May 14, 2008, 19-year-old Brandon Swanson believed he had simply driven into a roadside ditch while heading home from a celebration. After making a phone call to his parents for help, it seemed like nothing more than an inconvenience. As his parents searched for him, Brandon stayed on the phone with his father, describing landmarks and walking toward what he believed were the lights of a nearby town. For nearly an hour, the two remained connected, trying to close the distance between them. What followed was a brief outburst by Brandon, marking the very last known communication.

A Celebration Before the Journey Home
Brandon Swanson, born on March 17, 1989, was a freshman at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. On the evening of May 13, 2008, he had finished his classes and later joined friends to celebrate the completion of the spring semester at Lynd, a small town approximately 30 miles southwest of Marshall, Minnesota. Shortly before midnight, Brandon decided to drive home to Marshall, Minnesota, a trip that normally took around 30 minutes. Somewhere along the rural backroads of western Minnesota, however, he took a wrong turn.
At approximately 1:54 a.m. on May 14, 2008, Brandon called his parents to tell them that his car had become stuck in a ditch. Believing he was near the town of Lynd, he asked them to come pick him up. His parents immediately left home and drove toward Lynd. Yet despite remaining on the phone with Brandon, they couldn’t find him. Brandon insisted he could see the lights of the town and believed he was only a short walk away. As his parents searched nearby roads, Brandon decided to leave his vehicle and walk toward what he believed were the town lights. Throughout the call, he reassured his father that he would reach the road soon. The pair continued talking for roughly 47 minutes, and Brandon described his surroundings to his father, stating he was walking along a fence line following the town lights. His father repeatedly tried to guide him while also searching the area by car. However at 3:10 a.m., the call between them ended abruptly after Brandon shouted “Oh, sh*t!”. Several attempts were made to call back Brandon, but the phone remained unanswered.
The Search Begins
As daylight arrived, Brandon’s parents reported him missing. Investigators initially searched around Lynd based on Brandon’s description of his location. His abandoned vehicle was soon discovered on a remote gravel road. The car had become stuck in a shallow ditch but showed no signs of a collision or foul play. Personal belongings, including some of Brandon’s possessions, remained inside or near the vehicle. From there, an extensive search began. Law enforcement officers, volunteers, search dogs, helicopters, and all-terrain vehicles combed nearby farmland, drainage ditches, wooded areas, and rivers. Thousands of acres were searched over the following weeks. Despite the massive effort, no trace of Brandon was found.

Theories Surrounding the Disappearance
Because Brandon vanished so suddenly, investigators have considered multiple possibilities over the years. One theory suggests Brandon accidentally fell into a concealed well, abandoned farm structure, or deep water like the Yellow Medicine River or another water body in the area, Mud Creek, while walking through unfamiliar terrain in darkness. His sudden exclamation during the phone call has often been cited as supporting the possibility of an unexpected accident. However, it is not likely of any drowning incident as his cell phone remained turned on till May 16, 2008, according to the reports. Others believe he may have become disoriented after crossing fields and waterways, making it difficult for search teams to locate him.
Some have questioned whether foul play was involved. However, authorities have never identified evidence conclusively pointing to another person or announced any suspects in the case. Without physical evidence, Brandon’s disappearance remains unexplained.
