Who Were Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz?
At first glance, Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz appeared to be ordinary working men. Both were electronics repair technicians from the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, around 280 kilometers northeast of Rio de Janeiro. They were respected by friends and family and had no known criminal history. But outside work, the two shared an unusual passion.
They were fascinated by electronics, amateur radio, scientific experimentation, Spiritism, UFOs and paranormal phenomena. Like many enthusiasts during the 1960s Space Age, they believed science and the unknown might intersect in ways that conventional thinking could not yet explain. The Day They Disappeared
On August 17, 1966, the two men told their families they were traveling to Rio de Janeiro to purchase electronic components for work. They carried a large sum of money. According to the reports, they also stopped by a local clothing store in Niterói, where they purchased waterproof raincoats. The shop assistant later told police that the purchase stood out because the weather was hot and clear, making raincoats seem unnecessary. According to her account, one of the men appeared anxious and repeatedly checked his watch, as though they were trying to keep to a strict schedule.
The men also bought a bottle of mineral water before heading toward Vintém Hill. Witnesses later reported seeing the pair making their way up Morro do Vintém during the afternoon of August 17. The hill was well known locally for Spiritist gatherings and occasional reports of strange lights. However, there is no verified evidence linking those reports to the case. This was the last confirmed sighting of the two men alive.

What Happened Next Remains Unknown
Several residents claimed they had seen a bright orange object hovering over the hill that evening before disappearing into the clouds. Investigators documented these statements, but no evidence ever established that the lights were connected to the deaths. 3 days later, searchers found both men lying peacefully on the hillside. There were no defensive wounds. No signs of panic. No indication either man had tried to flee. They appeared to have lain down, and never gotten up again. Then investigators noticed the masks.
