What began as a carefree language-learning trip to the sun-soaked island of Malta ended in tragedy and lingering mystery for 17-year-old German student Mike Mansholt. When developments in the case began to emerge, they raised more questions than answers, turning Mike’s disappearance into a mystery that continues to attract attention. Despite investigations and numerous theories, the events surrounding his final days remain the subject of ongoing debate and speculation.
On July 18, 2016, Mike Mansholt rented a mountain bike and set off to explore the rugged Dingli Cliffs, the highest point in Malta. Before disappearing, he sent a final voice message to his girlfriend. His tone was upbeat and relaxed. He talked about the steep roads ahead, describing the ride as a “sporty challenge.” Nothing in his voice suggested danger or distress. After that message, Mike vanished. He never returned to his hotel. He never collected his belongings. And he never boarded his scheduled flight back to Germany.

What Happened to Mike Mansholt? Disappearance and Recovery Details
When Mike failed to return his rental bike the following day and did not board his flight home to Germany on July 22 2016, alarm bells began to ring. His family immediately flew to Malta, launching an extensive search that soon unraveled a horrible truth. On July 26, 2016, the search came to a tragic end when Mike Mansholt’s body was discovered in a rocky depression at the base of Malta’s towering Dingli Cliffs, nearly ten storeys below the roadway above. His rented mountain bike was found lodged in a bush just a short distance uphill, while his sunglasses and shoes lay scattered across the rugged terrain.

A Maltese post-mortem examination estimated that Mike had been dead for seven to eight days, placing the time of death around July 18, 2016, the same day he sent his final voice message. What initially appeared to be a fatal accident would soon raise troubling questions and spark controversy over what really happened during Mike’s final hours.

Mike Mansholt’s Missing Organs Mystery and Investigations
Maltese authorities ultimately concluded that Mike Mansholt’s death was the result of natural causes following a traumatic accident near Dingli Cliffs. However, family members, independent experts, and observers have pointed to several inconsistencies that appear difficult to reconcile with the official findings. Investigators at the time interpreted the body’s state as being affected by both trauma from impact and post-mortem environmental factors, including decomposition and possible scavenging by animals or marine exposure. This evidence did not find clear evidence of foul play and was treated the death as most likely accidental. Refusing to accept the official conclusion, Mike’s family pursued a European Investigation Order enabling German prosecutors to seek a court directive compelling Maltese authorities to continue examining the unanswered questions surrounding his death.
“My son, Mike, died in Malta in 2016. Unexplained cause. The exact circumstances that led to his death are still unclear and many circumstances are very mysterious… I will not give up until all the questions have been asked,” Mike’s father, Bernd Alexander Mansholt, addressed to Times of Malta.
Mike Mansholt’s father made multiple trips to Malta, continued conducting his own inquiries, tracking down potential witnesses, and revisiting key aspects of the case.
“I kept investigating the whole time and, in the meantime, I was back in Malta to question possible witnesses. Some time ago, a witness contacted me and reported an incident that may lead to the investigation. He added.
“I no longer believe Mike was alone when he died. At least one other person must have been present. There is no other way of explaining the circumstances. I have a theory about what happened at Dingli Cliffs on July 18, 2016. This theory is to be checked with the European Investigation Order.”
A subsequent examination in Germany reached more cautious and somewhat conflicting observations. Forensic experts noted that the remains showed limited or unclear skeletal trauma, which they felt did not strongly support a high-impact cliff fall as the sole explanation. They also reported unusual post-mortem conditions, including missing soft tissue. This raised questions about whether decomposition alone accounted for the body’s state. Forensic observers also noted that several internal organs were not present when the body was examined in Germany, which led to speculation that the organs had either decomposed rapidly due to environmental exposure. However, critics of this explanation argue that the extent of missing tissue described seemed unusual for a straightforward cliff fall followed by decomposition in a relatively short timeframe.
